Common Processing Window Elements

This is a screen shot of Curves, one of the most frequently used processing windows in PixInsight:

We may consider Curves as representative of typical processing windows for typical processes. Along with the set of controls dedicated to edit specific process parameters, on the bottom area of the window you can see a few elements that are common to almost every processing window in PixInsight. Most of the documentation material included in the rest of this chapter is dedicated to explain how to deal with these common window elements.


Accessing Processing Windows

In general, a processing window is accessed in PixInsight because (1) you know what process you want to apply at a given moment, or (2) you have an existing process instance, usually a process icon, and you want to edit it. The second case will be better described when we talk on process icons in depth. The first case must be addressed now. You have some ways to directly launch a particular processing window:

  • Process Tool Buttons
    There are many tool bars containing tool buttons that are associated to specific processes in PixInsight. Basically, there is a tool bar for each process category. For example, there is a tool bar dedicated to geometric processes, where one can find a button for Rotate:

Not all of the processing tool bars are visible by default. If you don't find a tool bar you're looking for, try with the Window > Tool Bars main menu item.

  • Process Main Menu Item
    From the Process main menu item, you have access to the whole set of available processes in PixInsight. Under the Process root item, menu items are organized in submenus by process categories. For example, to access the Rotate window:

  • File and Image Main Menu Items
    In addition, many processes are also accesible through the File and Image main menu items. This has been done this way to achieve a flexible main menu structure:
